The year 2025 has marked a very special milestone for Sylentis and the SYOLIGO project: the end of the third year of activity since its launch. Twelve months in which this strategic initiative, dedicated to the development and manufacture of RNA-based therapies, has demonstrated its ability to generate scientific advances, industrial consolidation and institutional recognition.
Since its creation, SYOLIGO has set itself a clear objective: to strengthen Spain and Europe’s position in RNA biotechnology and accelerate the development of innovative therapies, particularly those targeting rare diseases and unmet medical needs. On this second anniversary, the achievements made confirm that the path taken is solid and transformative.
- Strategic funding to boost research and industry
One of the most significant achievements has been obtaining public funding within the framework of the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) in health. This support has enabled progress to be made in two key areas: research into oligonucleotide-based therapies and the development of an industrial plant dedicated to the manufacture of therapeutic oligonucleotides.
This economic milestone not only legitimises the scientific potential of the project, but also represents an institutional commitment to strengthening national industrial capabilities in a key sector for the future of pharmaceuticals.
- Institutional support for the growth of the project
Throughout 2025, institutions such as the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities have recognised the strategic value of the project. This support strengthens Spain’s innovation ecosystem and puts Sylentis in a strong position to tackle the next steps in the project.
- Consolidation of Sylentis as a CDMO specialising in RNA
During this first year, SYOLIGO has driven Sylentis’ transformation into a key role as a CDMO specialising in the development and manufacture of therapeutic oligonucleotides. This evolution involves not only designing innovative molecules, but also producing them to industrial, sustainable and scalable standards.
- Scientific innovation
Scientific activity has been one of the pillars of the project.
Highlights for 2025 include:
- advances in the use of artificial intelligence for drug design
- development of more sustainable processes for the synthesis of therapeutic oligonucleotides.
These advances consolidate the project’s commitment to increasingly efficient and sustainable medicine.
- Dissemination of knowledge and presence at key events
Throughout the year, SYOLIGO has been presented and discussed in leading forums, consolidating its national and international recognition.
Among them are:
- Farmaforum 2025, where innovation and sustainability in the pharmaceutical industry were discussed
- conferences specialising in gene therapies and RNA biotechnology
- sectoral meetings focused on sustainable production and the circular economy applied to the healthcare sector
These spaces for dissemination and collaboration strengthen partnerships and promote knowledge transfer between industry and academia.
- Obtaining Good Manufacturing Practice certification from the European Medicines Agency for Sylentis’ new industrial plant
The NCF certification, granted by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), which carried out the audit, confirms that the plant complies with the highest international standards of quality, safety and control in all stages of the manufacture of medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
The pharmaceutical plant covers an area of 6,000 m² and has been built to the highest standards of sustainability and digitalisation to achieve maximum efficiency. The factory has a dual purpose: the manufacture of RNA-based medicines for third parties and the provision of manufacturing services for Sylentis’ research and clinical projects. The new plant, backed by Sylentis’ more than ten years of manufacturing experience, significantly increases its production capacity.
This third anniversary demonstrates that SYOLIGO was created with a clear purpose and a genuine capacity to make an impact:
- promotes science with transformative potential
- strengthens the European pharmaceutical industry
- positions Sylentis as a leader in RNA biotechnology
